Question Is Iraq the New Korea?

The below article is discussing the possibility and cost of a long-term US military presence in Iraq. Do you think this could be an acceptable outcome to this conflict, or are you one to want every single US troop out for good?

I'm just curious, and by no means am I going to judge logical responses to this.

My personal belief is that a long-term commitment is necessary to ensure we can keep fighting any extremists who linger after we pull 100,000+ troops out, and to keep the stability of the government. However; I also don't look forward to 3 decades of deployments to Iraq. Korea is way more fun!

Annual Cost For Troops In Iraq Seen At $10B-$25B

By Andrew Taylor, Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The cost of a long-term US military presence in Iraq similar to the peacekeeping role American troops have played in South Korea would range from $10 billion to $25 billion a year, the Congressional Budget Office said yesterday.

A Korea-like presence of 55,000 troops would cost about $25 billion a year in a "combat" scenario similar to the current mission, the nonpartisan CBO said in a report.

Keeping the troops protected at established military bases and out of combat would lower the cost to about $10 billion annually. One-time costs for base construction or additional equipment could reach $8 billion, the CBO said.

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, a Democrat from North Dakota, requested the study after President Bush compared America's future in Iraq to the peacekeeping role US troops play on the Korean Peninsula, where they have been stationed for five decades.

Re: Is Iraq the New Korea?

That's a tough question. I think it is inevitable. We have to maintain a presense in that area and this is the most logical place. What we need ios for the populace to start liking us so we don't have to keep watching our backs while we go shoping in the markets like we do in Korea.
