Re: War on "Terrorists";)
The reality is that we are fighting a war against Islamic Extremist Terrorism. Islamic Terrorists kill thousands of people around the world in places like: Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia Malaysia, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Somalia, Tanzania...(I'll stop there) but the number of innocent people who are bombed, beheaded, shot, and poisoned every year by Islamic Extremists is astounding.
If you are talking particularly about the war in Iraq...no we didn't find any WMD, but Saddam was a huge violator of human rights (not that he was the only one) and was responsible for the murder of over 100,000 of his own people. The difference between the US having WMD and Islamic Extremists is that the US has never used chemical or biological weapons against mankind. We used 2 atomic devices to end the Japanese aggression in 1945, and that was the last time nuclear weapons were used. Since 1992 we have been the leading (and sometimes only) country in the destruction of WMD around the world. We have substantially reduced our stockpiles of nuclear warheads, destroyed thousands of tons of our own chemical and biological weapons. We are actually in the process of destroying 100% of our Chemical and Biological weapons stockpile in this country. I am over here right now, and I've spoken with many Iraqis from all backgrounds...and not a single one says they want Saddam back. They would much rather deal with the current situation and improve from here, than to return to the regime of Saddam. The people in this nation enjoy more water, basic education, electricity, and income than ever under Saddam. And now with the reduction in sectarian violence (much of it due to people being plain sick and tired of fighting each other) there is a real shot of things turning around here. The war started under the pretenses of WMD; whether or not it was factually based is up to historians, experts, and politicians to debate. The fact remains that we are here fighting for these people, while people back home sit and watch it on CNN. We (the fighting men and women) would like to leave this country at least a little better than we found it. The reasons include not having to return for another war in the future, and to make things right with the Iraqi people, among other reasons. Let's not forget that there are 26 Million people in this country who want nothing more than to raise their family and live peacefully. They won't be able to do that if we don't give them the best possible chance to succeed as a nation...and that takes patience, perseverance, and dedication to the fight against extremism. |
