Tuesday night's showcase match between Andy Rod**** and Justin Gimelstob involved an All-American exchange with a Service Academy. Here's the replay:
In mid-match, Gimelstob prepares to serve, but is interrupted by Applause that begins to swell into a roar and a standing ovation. He stops.
The cameras and commentators realize that a large groujp of West Pointers are leaving the stadium and everyone is standing to applaud them. The players do likewise.
The crowd eventually quiets and Gimelstob starts to serve, but is again interrupted.
"Second service," says the Chair.
"Second service?!?!?!" says an incredulous Gimelstob, "for what?"
"Delay of game, you chose to delay the game." responds the Chair. The Chair has decided to assess a penalty for Gimelstob's decision to delay while the West Pointers departed and the fans cheered.
At this point, Gimelstob approaches the Chair and eloquently defends his decision. "I had to stop, it would have been Un-American!" The crowd is clearly cheering for Gimelstob and begins to chant "first-service, first service, first service.."
Quietly, Rod**** comes to the Chair, standing next to Gimelstob and says, "Go ahead Justin, I'll just take the second serve." Translation – he will intentionally not return the serve, thus voluntarily surrendering a point in a US OPEN TENNIS MATCH! The crowd thunders its approval.
Gimelstob returns to the service line and delivers the second serve...but he misses the service court!! It is a double fault!! Now Rod****'s noble act has been nullified because Gimelstob missed....but not quite.
The Chair - obviously realizing the moment and true meaning of his gaff - saves the day. He leans into the microphone... "First service."
