Snobs and elitism

"SNOBAMA"

An ad for a t-shirt on Drudge's web site used this clever (?) play on the word snob for Obama (although not very well, because wouldn't it have to be pronounced 'snow-bama'? See, this is why The Half Hour New Hour failed, conservatives aren't funny.) It also featured the line "It's an elitist thing. You wouldn't understand."

What makes Obama a snob...an elitist? Can someone explain this to me? I'm being serious...I honestly don't understand how people like Obama and many other democrats are labeled 'elitist.' Is it because they're educated? Is it because they speak well, AKA better than a lot of Americans? I know it was very common to hear that people liked GW Bush for the past two elections because he seemed like "someone they could have a beer with" or because he talked the way they do. Well, maybe I'm the only one, but I would prefer someone who is educated, dare I say smarter than me, to be running the country.

Have we become such a dumbed-down society in America that we don't want our leaders to be smart and successful people?

My other question is that why are democrats elitists, but republicans aren't? Do they not often make similar salaries? Sure, Obama made $4.2 million last year. How rich were Cheney and Bush before they took office? Cheney made $4.3 million in 2001. He's not a poor guy, and in 2004 he was still earning $194,852 in deferred compensation from Halliburton, the company he claimed he had severed all financial ties with. That seems like an unethical "I can do anything I want" attitude to me...so should I even question whether he's an "elitist?" He's a downright a**hole. He has time and time again snubbed his nose at average Americans, whether its because he doesn't care what the polls are saying or whatever. Obama doesn't leave me with that kind of impression...he atleast has a message that is good, whether he'll be able to follow through with good changes or not. I can't say anything remotely similar about Cheney.

And what I love the most is that hosts of crappy news shows are often throwing around how certain democrats are elitists. I'm sorry, how much do they make from being on TV? And you're right, I'm sure they're just a delight to be around any time of day: totally average, down-to-earth people.

Come on, you're telling me Hannity isn't a prima donna? Ha!

Thoughts?

Re: Snobs and elitism

Saw this story on Drudge today, and it discusses what I was talking about. By the way, gotta love how Drudge pulled out "Whoopi Goldberg: 'Democrats are an elitist group'..." as the headline; meanwhile, she says the same of Republicans and politicians in general. Read the articles, Drudge! Actually, I'm sure he does read them, and knows that a vast majority of his readers will simply read his headlines and smirk to themselves thinking "Ha, even a famous Democrat admits it!"

Anyways, I like the part of the article that points out that Obama was raised by his single mother and they lived off of food stamps for a little while. Nothing cries 'elitism' like an experience like that!

Why applaud a man who has done well with his life...who has become successful? What with lottery winners and heirs of their mommy and daddy's fortune, surely the person who works for their money doesn't have any more character. I find it funny that GW Bush, who was handed everything in life from a rich and powerful father, was viewed as a likeable, hometown boy who you could have a beer with...but Obama, who has worked hard to turn around his life and become successful, he's the elitist. Oh, the things the media can make us believe!
