Re: Obama and the Pledge: Can this be real?
Yes, it's a real picture. He feels the hand-over-the-heart has gone the way of the lapel US Flag pin. Basically he thinks they've lost their meaning because so many people use them for political purposes or false reasons...etc.
He has been seen holding his hand over his heart at some events, and then not doing it at yet others. I understand the man has a point he's trying to make, but a little consistency would be nice. Check it out:Urban Legends Reference Pages: Barack Obama and the National Anthem |

Re: Obama and the Pledge: Can this be real?
Looks like the gang is all back and posting again, so I suppose I'll chime in as well.
This story really disappointed me. I think he's an intelligent guy, and I defended him when I received an email from a family member that claims Obama is a radical Muslim. The email claimed that all of it's attacks on Obama were proven true by snopes.com, however, anyone who took the time to look it up would see that the claims are, in fact, false: Urban Legends Reference Pages: Who Is Barack Obama? So then to have this story come out, and for his team to confirm that sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't, just sucks for Obama supporters. I can kindof understand the no flag pin thing, 'cos come on...it's just a pin. Actions speak louder than pins. In his explanation of not wearing a pin, he mentioned the fact that some who wear it aren't really as patriotic as they pretend. But then to do this and give people more ammo against him...and rightly so...just doesn't make sense to me. On a side note, I think it's funny that Richardson is the lone guy facing forward while everyone else is apparently watching something.

Re: Obama and the Pledge: Can this be real?
Hey tROCO,
You're supposed to disagree with me on this one. What is wrong with you? I think it's bad marketing on his part. I'm a big fan of the US and its customs. One of those is the pledge of allegiance. I can't believe that a potential president would not put his hand over his heart. That is as American as "apple pie". You could be pissed at the Bush administration and at the way some things are going, but to take it out on the pledge just doesn't seem right to me. Glad your back. Canto |

Re: Obama and the Pledge: Can this be real?
Yeah, well that's why I have a problem when people act like Americans who lean more to the left are "anti-American." In my experience, liberals tend to do something because they love America and want it to be better. But then Obama goes and does something like this...it's not helping my cause.
The apple pie comment reminded me of a quote from a recent episode of Colbert Report: "I'm more American than apple pie. I'm like apple pie with a hot dog in it."

Re: Obama and the Pledge: Can this be real?
I would never think of calling you anti-American. Misguided maybe, but never anti-American.
I think that people like you and I just have completely different views of what the US could and should be. That's what makes all of this so interesting. |
