Re: Who should I vote for?
As a conservative republican, you're best bet is going to be Hillary.
Before the OMGWTFBBQ starts because I said Hillary, allow me to explain. Hillary supports the war in Iraq, her biggest supporters are big business and corporations. She's playing the old triangulation game from way back, trying to put herself in the center, hoping to gain the support of independents without losing too much of her base. She won't go after a marriage amendment or an abortion ban, but she won't be giving them more legal ground either. She won't be pulling troops out of Iraq, if anything she'll try to expand the war. She won't be getting rid of private contractors in Iraq, she won't be putting major money into New Orleans. Of all the Dem candidates, Hillary would end up leaving things at a status quo on social issues. If the Republicans can regain some national respect, they could take her down in a re-election bid. Of the front runner Democratic candidates right now, Hillary is the Republicans best chance of winning the election outright with Guilliani or Romney. Obama and Edwards can and probably will crush any Republican opponent this cycle. With the impending recession and Iraq to deal with, 2012 will probably be a different story. Having said all that, personally I hope Hillary loses the primary by a wide margin. There are no Republicans I'd vote for, and it'd make me sick to have to vote for Hillary against anyone. I prefer Edwards myself, but I could deal with having to vote for and even support any of the other Dems. A conservative republican isn't going to 'like' any of the Dem candidates this year. So pretty much that leaves them with Hillary as the least offensive to what they want. |

Re: Who should I vote for?
Hillary reminds me of "Old Democrat" from back in the day. Remember the 1920s - 1960s? That's when it was Republicans who were mostly isolationist and wanted to leave well enough alone. The Dems actually wanted to go out and 'do good things' for their fellow man around the world. Like stopping the Axis in WWII, and countering Communism wherever it found a foothold outside of Russia.
Then in the late 60's early 70's (Vietnam was 90% responsible for the shift) there was a paradigm shift where Dems became more 'hands-off' to the world's problems, and the Republicans started to get a little more pro-active in the fight overseas. That's not to say that elements don't exist in either party to think either way, but that's the big shift that we're living in now. And Hillary reminds me of how the Dems used to think back then. She also scares me something fierce, and seems unpredictable to me. I like Obama's fresh new politics he's trying to bring to 'old Washington'. This next election is going to be a lot of fun (read: challenging) for a lot of voters on both sides. *note 1: I didn't live in the 60's or 70's ![]() **note 2: I'm still not convinced that Hillary (or 'the left') is the answer to our problems. |
